Come to Harbor View Restaurant, 4 Embarcadero Center.

Meeting begins at 11:45am in the lounge / bar area.  Optional lunch to follow 12:45 -  1:30pm.   $40

Rotarian Terry Wilson from the Rotary Club of San Carlos will share his new book written about the Maasai Mara

Earned a degree in English with Journalism Major, courtesy of the GI Bill.  While in college I became a reporter and photographer. Following year taught English at Canada College; and next year took over the journalism department while my professor/good friend wrote his third book.  Manager editor of two local weekly's following two years; but joined an S&L as publicist in 1988 when the CEO offered to triple my salary.  Was publicist, then public information officer for the 43-branch S&L. Produced a four-color 24-page quarterly magazine, writing the stories, taking the photographs, and designing the publication. Later was marketing manager for a Squaw Valley timeshare. Sold out in one year; job ended; and I was offered a job as a loan agent where I have spent the past 35 years.  Served as Rotary newsletter editor countless times; served on the BOD; Endowment Board; and as Club President.  Travelled most of the world with my loving wife until she passed away in 2021 from pancreatic cancer surgery complications.   After being together over 50 years, the devastating loss of my wife still weighs heavily on my heart and soul.  Have always--since about aged eight--written poetry and short stories until my three trips to Africa on water installation projects.  As a result of these trips, I wrote my first book, Miracle in the Mara that was just published.  Have my mother, two adult sons, daughter-in-law with three grandsons, three sisters, and a cousin with his wife and four grand nephews.  Life has been good, exciting, and taken very different paths to get to this point in my life.

CLEAN WATER in Kenya Project, Oakland #3

Feb 15, 2023 12:00 PM

Chinatown Restaurant, 744 Washington Street, SF.  $35

Project Overview
To create boreholes at Rawinji and St Charles Kauko Primary schools to serve

both the children and the surrounding communities. To improve sanitation in the 2 schools by providing new toilets and hand wash areas.

Description

This project is a follow-on from a non-global or district grant project done by RC Kisumu Winam and RC Oakland to protect two surface wells in Rawinji and Obisa villages. The impact was immediate and resulted in an 80% increased usage of the water points. The water the wells supplied became inadequate, impacting the community as a whole and

the two local primary schools in particular.

A community assessment was then initiated by meeting with the community members leading to the agreement of drilling boreholes as a reliable source of clean water that can adequately support both the communities and the schools. It was agreed that the borehole be located within the schools, as schools are community/government owned and can provide security for the

project. During assessment meetings with the schools the need for improving sanitation at the schools became apparent. On further consultation with the school principals The CBO and Rotary were asked to improve/replace the toilet blocks and provide hand washing areas. St Charles Kauko schools have 1 door toilet for 234 girls and 1 door toilet for 321boys while Rawinji Primary has 1 door toilet for 430 boys and 1 door toilet for 453 girls

International Women's Day

Mar 08, 2023 3:30 PM

Where: This event will be held at the Academy of Art Automobile Museum, 1849 Washington Street (corner of Washington Street and Van Ness Avenue). Follow signs to enter on the Van Ness Avenue side.

International Women's Day is celebrated each year on March 8 to recognize women’s achievements, to raise awareness, and to reflect on gender equality worldwide. The celebration of this day began in New York City on March 8, 1857, by textile workers who called for shorter workdays and improved wages. In 1975, the United Nations General Assembly began celebrating March 8 as International Women’s Day, and it has since become a movement to honor women across the globe.

As March 8, 2023 approaches, we cordially invite you to join us in this in-person celebration at the Auto Museum of the Academy of Art University, which is home to over 200 classic cars and one of the best museums in the Bay Area. This is a wonderful opportunity to network, to hear women's inspiring and thought-provoking stories firsthand, to participate in assembling comfort care kits for local women in need, and to discover ways to empower each other worldwide. Everyone is welcome to attend either the VIP Reception (beginning at 3:30 PM) or the General Reception (beginning at 4 PM).

The PROGRAM will be held from 5 PM to 6 PM:

  • Welcome from Emcees: Johwell Saint-Cillien of the Rotary Club for Global Action Member and Past Rotary District 5150 Governor Mary Bates of the Rotary Club of Foster City
  • Welcome Address: Dr. Elisa Stephens, President, Academy of Art University and Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco
  • Presenters:

Dr. Sylvia Whitlock,
Police Chief Tracy Avelar,
Firefighter Bella DeRuva,
 and
Rotary District 5150 Interact Youth Leaders, as they “look to the future”.
