International Women's Day

Mar 08, 2023 3:30 PM

Where: This event will be held at the Academy of Art Automobile Museum, 1849 Washington Street (corner of Washington Street and Van Ness Avenue). Follow signs to enter on the Van Ness Avenue side.

International Women's Day is celebrated each year on March 8 to recognize women’s achievements, to raise awareness, and to reflect on gender equality worldwide. The celebration of this day began in New York City on March 8, 1857, by textile workers who called for shorter workdays and improved wages. In 1975, the United Nations General Assembly began celebrating March 8 as International Women’s Day, and it has since become a movement to honor women across the globe.

As March 8, 2023 approaches, we cordially invite you to join us in this in-person celebration at the Auto Museum of the Academy of Art University, which is home to over 200 classic cars and one of the best museums in the Bay Area. This is a wonderful opportunity to network, to hear women's inspiring and thought-provoking stories firsthand, to participate in assembling comfort care kits for local women in need, and to discover ways to empower each other worldwide. Everyone is welcome to attend either the VIP Reception (beginning at 3:30 PM) or the General Reception (beginning at 4 PM).

The PROGRAM will be held from 5 PM to 6 PM:

  • Welcome from Emcees: Johwell Saint-Cillien of the Rotary Club for Global Action Member and Past Rotary District 5150 Governor Mary Bates of the Rotary Club of Foster City
  • Welcome Address: Dr. Elisa Stephens, President, Academy of Art University and Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco
  • Presenters:

Dr. Sylvia Whitlock,
Police Chief Tracy Avelar,
Firefighter Bella DeRuva,
 and
Rotary District 5150 Interact Youth Leaders, as they “look to the future”.

Colleen Quen, Couturier

Born and lives in San Francisco, California, 1962.   Fourth generation Chinese American.

My charming Atelier is privately tucked away on one of the highest San Francisco hills called Telegraph by Coit Tower.

My three decades of work in Couture fashion and art in my community as well as internationally,  are inspired by my global cultural influences from my Eastern Spiritual heritage, my American upbringing and French couture education which lead to my International Museum commissions, Ballet costumes and Private Clientele which are exhibited and worn all around the world.  Integrating my cultural experiences and life dedication to Couture and art it internally speaks to me with such pure clarity and intention. I am an optimistic poet, romantic sculptor expressing and creating each art piece with my heart and hands through the characteristics of fabric and the human spirit.   To be a creative vessel, educator and communicator for our planet through our Fashion Design.   My life mission in my work, is to always bring forth a Universal message with honor to French Couture and the message of pure Beauty, Elegance and Style.
